Working Together To Develop Youth and Women in Guatemala
St. Joan of Arc Catholic Community has a 19-year Sister Parish relationship with Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Tierra Nueva II (TNII) in Guatemala. Our hermanamiento is based on respect and mutuality, with a special focus on the development of women, children and young adults.
As a result, Sister Parish committee members in our two communities collaborate annually on several projects in TNII targeted at lifting up women and youth. Two of these projects are highlighted below (click to view proposal):
These projects require teamwork and effort by both communities. The folks in TNII develop detailed proposals on why funding is needed for these initiatives and how it will be spent. By writing the proposals and overseeing the implementation of the scholarships and projects, they develop vital organizational, analytical and leadership skills. SJA provides most of the funding, although it is gratifying to note that a few youth scholarships are now funded by members of the TNII community.
These remarkable proposals from TNII provide a glimpse into the cultural and economic challenges of youth and women in Guatemala, and how we are working together to help them develop to their full potential.
