As we look toward the upcoming July 4 celebration, we will reflect on both patriotism and nationalism - particularly the rise of Christian nationalism in our country, and the reminder that it is up to us to reclaim the values that truly ground our faith and our democracy. Thanks to our readers Tinia Moulder, Josephine Spaulding, and Marty Roddy. Thank you also to Pam Oleson Kremer and Luke Nohner for our visuals, and to Deb Harley and Terrie Coats for our music.
In today's gospel, Jesus instructs us to care for others as he did. Our music today reflects both Jesus’ call to care for others and our present need to care for our country. When everyone joins in our song and together we all sing in harmony that's when we'll be free (Hymn to Freedom, by Oscar Peterson & Harriet Hamilton) And we’ll all sing hallelujah, when we see things change once more. We will rise out of the ashes, like so many times before. We’ll make this a better country, for every daughter, every son. Our American Dream, a welcome home for everyone. (Our American Dream, by Deb Harley)
