"NATIONAL BOOK AWARD NOMINEE- The riveting history of how Pauli Murray--a brilliant writer-turned-activist--and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt forged an enduring friendship that helped to alter the course of race and racism in America." (Thrift Books)
It is a biography about the friendship between civil rights activist Pauli Murray and Eleanor Roosevelt, and while it is not exclusively an LGBTQ+ romance or fiction novel, it significantly explores Murray's identity as a queer Black woman, including her same-sex relationships and gender fluidity. (New York Times)
Written by Patricia Bell-Scott, the book details Murray's trailblazing life—struggling against racism and sexism while navigating her sexuality and personal life—and incorporates elements of LGBTQ+ history because of Murray's central role as a queer historical figure.
