Today was a day of sadness and joy: sadness because we know we have only tomorrow remaining with our sisters and brothers of Tierra Nueva II, and joy because we celebrate life and 20 years of this Sister Parish relationship.
We began our day meeting with the Sister Parish Committee, discussing ways to increase communication, upcoming projects, and future visions and goals.
We then had a gathering with the 15 students receiving scholarships - 12 of these from SJA. We heard stories of hope and gratitude for the opportunity to complete high school and the possibility of college.
This was followed by by playful activities and a robust game of soccer with the youth of the parish - what great energy and laughter.
The day ended with a 20th anniversary celebration where music was performed by both parishes and the scholarship students presented an indigenous altar followed by a dance from their roots and ending in their current form of dance.
And of coarse, there was the piñata which created great excitement.
Reflection: a people so oppressed by their government and living in poverty beyond our imagination give the greatest gift of all - themselves. We are truly sisters and brothers in the Lord.
