2019 Sister Parish Delegation from Guatemala

On August 2, we will welcome delegates Alba and Miriam from our sister parish in Tierra Nueva II (TNII), Guatemala. They will spend 10 days with our community, sharing spiritual and cultural activities and savoring the bonds of faith, friendship and love that have developed during our 25-year “sister” church relationship. As in the past, we will be highlighting the activities of this delegation on a blog page. Check out the schedule HERE.

You are invited to join us as we travel the journey of our delegation. Here are a few suggestions:

  • Greet the delegates at church. Make our guests feel welcome by saying hello at Sunday masses on August 4 and 11.
  • Festive gatherings and cultural activities.
Sundays, August 4 & 11: All are invited to our opening and closing potlucks at 5pm in Hospitality Hall. There will be music (on August 4, we're joined by the Angry Baker Brass Band!), games and stories, and of course good food! Based on the first letter of your last name, here are the suggested food assignments: Aug. 4: A - J, entrée; K - R, salad; S - Z, dessert. On Aug. 11: A - H, salad; L - O, dessert; P - Z, entrée
During the week of August 5 - 9, we will be meeting with SJA ministries and visiting Twin Cities organizations including Gichitwaa Kateri Chuch, Bolder Options and Casa Esperanza. Our delegates will stand with peacemakers at the weekly vigil on the Lake Street Bridge and serve with Mobile Loaves Twin Cities. Miriam and Alba will also speak at mass on August 11, with cake in the Welcome Center to follow both masses. We invite you to join us for this week of great activities.
  • Volunteer!  To volunteer as a driver, helper or a Spanish language facilitator, contact Nancy Wiens (nancywiens1 [at]

Let's meet our delegates:

Alba Rivera
I am 53 years old and have 3 children - Jose Miguel, Juan Carlos, and Jessenia. I have 4 grandchildren. I am working for a family from the U.S. Embassy right now. I am in the Peregrinos Choir at the church in TN2 and I am currently the Coordinator of the Peregrinos Bible Study group. I am very excited to spend time with you all in August.
Miriam Vasquez
My name is Miriam Vásquez. I’ve been married to my husband Bernardo for 27 years and we have 2 beautiful daughters: Fernanda, who is 25 years old, and Sofia, who is 14 years old. I worked as a nurse for 22 years. I retired 9 years ago and I am really enjoying this time to do what I like now. I have a lot of responsibilities, but this makes me happy. I like to spend time with people, get to know them, and get to know their inner beings, because this makes me be a better person. I am very interested in taking action for peace and justice. I have been involved in the Women’s Ministry at the church for a long time. I have learned from other women that, whatever happens, we need to rise and find a path through desperation. Another important thing that I have learned with the women is that we have to be united because we are all equals as women. Right now, for different life reasons, I am working with children in a program called Spark Center [a Catholic Charities program to provide for learning through play]. I have realized that God always grants you privileges. In my free time, I like to make crafts, read, go to Zumba, practice Tai Chi, and watch TV with my family. I have been involved in Sister Parish since its beginning. Everyone I have met through this program has stolen my heart. I love you and I appreciate you. I admire how committed you are to the sistering relationship. You are my example to follow. I hope to see you soon so that we can get to know each other more.
