Center For Victims of Torture. Members of Welcome the Stranger attended a benefit breakfast to support the Center for Victims of Torture on Thursday, October 10th at the Civic Center. Pictured are, Val Moller, Kathy Wedl, Rose Grengs, Bob Wedl and Joel Racchini. Guests heard a moving account by Patricia, a former client of CVT, who narrowly escaped an attack in South Africa. Friends helped her buy a ticket on a flight to Canada, concealing the fact she was 9 months pregnant. Unfortunately, while the plane refueled in El Salvador, her baby was born, and they were imprisoned. Miraculously, she made her way to MN and CVT, where she experienced dark years, but eventually, recovery. She is now a writer, coach and inspirational speaker. Hers is but one story of unspeakable suffering and survival with the help CVT, our local resource, which needs our support.
Jonathan House. Members of Welcome The Stranger also attended a benefit breakfast on Tuesday, October 15, 2019, to support Jonathan House, which provides housing and community to asylum-seeking refugees in Minneapolis-St. Paul. Jonathan House residents receive shelter during the critical period when they’re applying for asylum and are not yet legal permitted to work. In the words one resident: “Jonathan House is a very good place for those who are coming who have no friends, no family, no hope. It has provided hope for those who are hopeless.”
Jonathan House currently has two sites and has housed 11 asylum seekers since November 2017. They anticipate launching a third site in partnership with Casa Guadalupana/Church of St. Matthews in January 2020. Jonathan House is 100% donor-funded and needs our support.
