On Wednesday, March 29, 2017, The SJA Welcome The Stranger Ministry organized a group of people from St. Joan of Arc for a trip to the capital in support of Muslim Day at the Capitol. This was the 13th year that Muslim organizations in MN have organized an all-day event at the Capital aimed at discussing the concerns of Muslim-Americans in Minnesota.
Asad Zaman, the executive director of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, told the crowd "Muslim Day is not just for Americans. It is for anyone willing to help advocate for a better life in Minnesota."
Unlike previous years, the message this year was that now more than ever many Muslims feel misunderstood, subjected to scrutiny, and outright bigotry. At the same time the crowd was addressed by many non-Muslim leaders, including Gov. Mark Dayton and Rep. Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American legislator in Minnesota.
This event was part of a new and hopefully ongoing outreach by the Welcome The Stranger group to our Muslim neighbors. Watch for future opportunities for all parish members to be involved in this outreach.
