On Tuesday, February 25, more than 350 SJAers attended their precinct caucuses, bringing forth our ISAIAH faith agenda. Many were elected as delegates to their Senate District conventions, and we are grateful to everyone who attended and shared this messy process of democracy with their neighbors!
Our faith agenda comes from ISAIAH, a coalition of more than 100 faith communities and other community organizations coming together for a democracy that honors every person's dignity, and an economy that allows everyone to thrive.
Catholic Social Teaching tells us that we have a right and a responsibility to participate in the political life of our community, and that government has a role in promoting human dignity and building the common good. We will never endorse a party or a candidate and our language will be the language of shared values. We are inspired by these words from Pope Francis:
"Sometimes we hear: A good Catholic is not involved in politics. This is not true: Good Catholics immerse themselves in politics by offering the best of themselves so that leaders can lead. An authentic faith...always involves a deep desire to change the world, to transmit values, to leave this earth somehow better than we found it. We love this magnificent planet on which God has put us, and we love the human family which dwells her. The earth is our common home and all of us are brothers and sisters. If indeed 'the just ordering of society and of the state is a central responsibility of politics,' the Church 'cannot and must not remain on the sidelines in the fight for justice."
Thank you, SJA - you are never on the sidelines of the fight for justice!
