Saturday, February 10
The morning was spent touring St Joan of Arc and learning the history of the parish. Followed by a joint Sister Parish meeting where we got to hear each other’s stories and sharing lunch together.
Friday, February 9: The delegates arrive
After traveling for the bulk of the day, delegates Olga and Pedro (and Sister Parish staff member Carrie and son Milo) were warmly greeted at the airport. They were escorted to SJA for a brief period of fellowship and then whisked off by their host families for dinner and a good night's sleep. As Olga said, "Comienza la aventura inolvidable". The unforgettable adventure begins!
December 2017: Visa Interviews at U.S. Embassy
The United States requires Guatemalans to have visas to enter our country. We are saddened to report that three of the five potential delegates who were selected by the parish in Guatemala to travel here to Minnesota were denied visas by the U.S. Embassy (including one woman who came with a delegation in 2013).
Sister Parish staff and potential delegates go through an extensive process to apply for tourist visas, including letters and phone calls of invitation and support from Saint Joan of Arc Catholic Community, Senator Amy Klobuchar and Representative Keith Ellison’s office. The process culminates in an in-person interview at the Embassy in Guatemala City. The interviews with our potential delegates were brief and included questions such as “Where are you going?” and “Are you married/have children?” We were told the interviewers in several cases did not accept the supporting documents / letters we had prepared.
We do not know the reasons for this visa denial and no rationale was given. It is always a blow to receive such news, but we will be ready for our brother Pedro and our sister Olga as they become the first Guatemalans to join us in the winter!
