The Results of Visa Interviews for the 2019 TNII Delegation

Meet the Delegates from Tierra Nueva II, Guatemala!
We are beginning preparations to welcome the five people who have been elected by their peers at Our Lady of Guadalupe church, our beloved 'sister parish', to represent them during the 10-day delegation arriving here on August 2. This year is extra-special -- we will be celebrating the 25-year anniversary of St. Joan of Arc's relationship with Tierra Nueva II! We look forward to welcoming them joyfully into our community and our hearts.

These delegates represent various groups within Our Lady of Guadalupe church. They are pictured above (l to r):
Brandon Gonzalez (Cristo Vive/youth group)
Enio Guzman (church board)
Juana Morales Mendez (Christian base communities)
Alba Rivera (Peregrinos/Bible study group)
Odilia Vasquez (Women’s group)

Visa Interviews at U.S. Embassy

Today, April 8, was visa application day for Juana, Enio, Brandon, Odilia and Alba, the potential delegates selected by our sister parish in Guatemala to travel here to Minnesota.
Process: A great deal of preparation goes into the application process:

  • SJA draws up church documentation and invitation letters, pays visa and passport fees, and gathers congressional letters of support and invitation.  On ‘visa day’, the church office is poised to field possible verification calls from the U.S. embassy and we collectively hold our breath.
  • The delegates spend months compiling the necessary paperwork for the application and practicing for the Embassy interview, and then travel to and from the U.S. Embassy in Guatemala City on the day of their interview.

Outcome: We are saddened to report that four of the five potential delegates — Juana, Enio, Brandon, and Odilia — were denied visas by the U.S. Embassy.  We do not know the reasons for this visa denial and no rationale was given. It is always a blow to receive such news, and we extend our support and love to these sisters and brothers.

We are now planning for a small but mighty two-person delegation: Alba and Miriam (a back-up delegate who already has a 10-year visa.) We will be ready to welcome them with open arms when they join us this August!
